Dining at Ras Dashen. The restaurant, which takes its name from the highest mountain in Ethiopia, is owned by Zenash Beyene and her husband Kevin. Zenash was cooking for the Ethiopian community in her house, where she and Kevin met. She is an Ethiopian Jew, part of a “lost tribe” of Jews (known as Falasha [strangers] to the Ethiopians and to themselves as the Bete Israel [house of Israel]). The tribe lived according to a mixture of Jewish and Ethiopian traditions. (2005Mar20)
